Iliaco 2000 kiosk
by Jim Allman (founder), when employed at Image Associates

solution: Animated explanation of an innovative, optical high-voltage meter
client: ABB (Asea Brown Boveri), a manufacturer of industrial equipment
our role(s): Concept development, art direction, illustration

The client was introducing an innovative optical product into a market dominated by bulky but established competitors. They needed to quickly explain its principles of operation to a key audience of engineers and utility workers.

The Iliaco's design is based on the fact that strong electromagnetic fields "bend" light, the so-called Faraday effect. It's a fairly simple idea, but it normally requires a lot of hand-waving and imagination to communicate. Jim designed a simple looping animation that showed how the device would respond to changes in voltage.
